Import to Korea: Step-by-Step Customs Process
Are you planning to import goods into Korea but not sure how the customs process works?
In this video, we’ll guide you through the five essential steps of Korea’s import clearance process — from a customs broker’s perspective.
1️⃣ Business Registration & UNI-PASS Customs Code
Before importing, you need to register your business in Korea and obtain a customs client code through the UNI-PASS system. This code identifies your company in all import/export transactions.
2️⃣ Document Preparation
Prepare the required documents for customs clearance — including the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading (or airway bill), and any import permits or certificates depending on the product type.
3️⃣ Import Declaration & Timing
Submit your import declaration through UNI-PASS before or after the goods arrive, depending on your shipment type. A licensed customs broker can handle this electronically on your behalf.
4️⃣ Customs Examination
Korean Customs reviews your documents and may conduct either a document review or a physical inspection of the goods, depending on the risk level and product classification.
5️⃣ Duty Payment & Cargo Release
Once the import declaration is approved and duties/taxes are paid, your goods are cleared for release and can be delivered from the bonded area to your warehouse or distribution center.
